I noticed that in June one of the two credit card companies that I am currently doing business with (which shall remain nameless) raised the APR on my account by 4% for no apparent reason (other than the fact that they wanted more money from me). I switched to e-statements many months ago and haven't used the card in quite awhile but carried a balance. I haven't made any late payments and haven't exceeded my credit limit. However, I really didn't scrutinize the statements each month like I should have. I just scanned to make sure there were no new charges each month and that my payment was credited on time and then I scheduled my next payment online. When was looking at my statement this month and I noticed that they increased my rate I sent a message through their secure online message system and received a canned response back that I should call their 800 number.
That answer was not good enough for me, so, they immediately lost my credit card balance (to a 0% transfer offer) along with my car loan (to my credit union at a lower interest rate) this week. I was shocked at how easy re-financing my car was. I thought it was going too much of a pain for only a few bucks a month, so I didn't do it. I ended up saving more than I thought I was going to, plus it was simple!
So, I guess I owe a thank you to the big, stupid bank for having the net effect of saving me some money each month for pissing me off enough to go through the "hassle" of ditching you. Goodbye and good riddance. Now I have to get rid of the other bigger bank that I have the pleasure of owing money to...
